What kind of headaches do you have?

iHeadache is an expert system. It classifies the type of headache you are having by analyzing your symptoms, the duration of the headache and medications taken. It uses the International Headache Society Criteria (IHS II). Knowing the type of headache you have is the first step toward optimizing your care. Learn more about headache classification!

Track your symptoms.

iHeadache records symptoms common with various types of headaches. The symptoms you enter into iHeadache are key to determining the type of headache you are having. iHeadache uses your symptoms to classify your headache as a one of the following:

Track your medication usage.

Concerned you are using too many medications or using them too often? Or maybe you are concerned that you aren't using them often enough. Capturing medication usage helps to identify optimal treatment strategies and identify medication overuse which can result in rebound headaches.

What triggers your headaches?

Does everything that tastes good also have to be bad for our health? Chocolate, Wine & Caffeine are just a few common headache triggers. With iHeadache you can track potential causes of your headaches and determine if your "chocolate addiction" is causing all of those headaches. The app is pre-loaded with the most common headache triggers and if you want to track a trigger that is not in the system - you can even create your own custom triggers! Trigger tracking is only available in iHeadache for iPhone & iPod Touch.

Do your headaches interfere with your life?

Capture the amount of time you're stuck in bed, laying on the couch, or walking around the office completely zapped because of a headache. You can also track the degree that you are disabled using the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS scale). Trust us-if you walk into your doctor's office with your MIDAS score, you will be his favorite patient that day (maybe for the whole week).

Reports that help you and your doctor?

iHeadache prepares reports by months, 28 day or 30 day time periods. It summarizes critical information for you and your physician like:

  • Number of headaches you have.
  • How much medication you are taking.
  • How much disability you have because of your headaches.
  • Any special notes that you entered about your headaches.

You can see if the treatment changes make a meaningful impact on your care. This will help you and your physician improve your treatment outcome.

Your Unique Settings

The settings area is where you set up the medications you usually take when you have a headache. On the iPhone version, you also keep track of the triggers that are being tracked.

iHeadache is an expert system. Some physicians care greatly about how iHeadache determines your headache type. Preferences are available so you can specify exactly how iHeadache should analyze your headaches. Time rules can be specified and you can set rules about how to classifying headaches in the rare instances that criteria for multiple headache types are met. You probably do not care about any of these settings but your doctor might!

iHeadache was developed by Dr. Brian D. Loftus of Bellaire Neurology. Dr. Loftus is a private practice neurologist, headache specialist, educator and researcher. He developed iHeadache to improve communication between physicians and their patients, improve accuracy of diagnosis and track disability. iHeadache is patient centric and the reports generated are specifically designed to aid the patient’s physician in improving their health outcome.

*iHeadache does not support diagnosing cluster headaches at this time however, you can still use the tool to track the number of cluster headaches you are having.
